Casual fine dining in a Chester County landmark

The core of what is now the Ludwig's Inn & Oyster Bar was built between 1843 and 1852 by merchant Samuel Fertig. During that period, "Ludwig's Corner" was the intersection of two important turnpikes at the heart of a village which included a post office, general store, clock maker, church, school and stop for a daily stage which ran from Phoenixville to Morgantown.

Fertig was granted a license to open an "Eating House with the privilege of selling beer, ale, porter, cider and sweet meats."

During this period, West Vincent was an active Underground Railroad stop for escaping slaves and it is believed that tunnels may have been dug from this building under the turnpikes.

The structure has changed ownership many times, serving as a store, post office, family residence, tea room and antique shop, and restaurant. Previously named the Ludwig's Corner Inn and the Black Angus, in 1992, when its current owners completely refurbished it adding an oyster bar, changed its name accordingly. There remains a comfortable, convivial ambiance along with a sense of 150 years of history coming and going through its doors.
